Curriculum

The Project 168 curriculum includes 10 competency areas. The specific curricula for each area are listed below. Each competency area, developed by a University content expert, has required core experiences accompanied by electives. At a minimum, students will engage in 50 unique experiences.


SERVICE, CIVIC ENGAGEMENT AND ACTIVISM

Required Core (1)

  • Complete 12 hours of community service in an area you are passionate about and log them in iServe

Elective Options (2)

  • Participate in an official public education campaign
  • Design your own social action project or participate in a project you're passionate about
  • Register to vote in your home nation (if applicable)
  • Connect with a nonprofit organization and carry out a donation drive
  • Attend a WVU-Potomac State College community engagement/volunteer fair and visit a minimum of three organizations
  • Participate in programming in a local West Virginia county provided by WVU Extension Services
  • Hold active membership in a service-based organization
  • Attend a local/state/national debate, forum, meeting, legislative session, etc.
  • Complete 10 hours of service with the same organization (in addition to the core requirement)
  • Complete a national service program (i.e. AmeriCorps state or national, AmeriCorps VISTA, AmeriCorps NCCC (if completed, this will count for both elective requirements)
  • Complete a service-based program with Adventure WV
  • Vote in an election

CAREER AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Required Core (3)

  • Complete your Handshake profile
  • Schedule an appointment with a career development specialist (CDS) in Career Services
  • Upload your resume to Handshake after it is reviewed by a career development specialist (CDS)

Elective Requirements (2)

Register for one of the following career and professional development courses (if completed, the course will count for both elective requirements)

  • ORIN 151 - Choosing a Major and Career: Find your purpose if you are unsure about your major or are considering changing majors
  • ORIN 152: Learning Career Skills- Begin preparing for an internship or other career-related work experience
  • ORIN 251: Preparing for Success – Refine your resume, build a professional network, and master the interview process
  • BTEC 202 - Professionalism
    • Complete FOCUS2 to explore possible majors and career options to discuss with a Career Development Specialist (CDS)
    • Attend a career fair and/or professional development event hosted by Career Services
    • Identify and complete career-related summer or part-time jobs that complement your major
    • Job shadow with a local company to gain exposure in your chosen area/field
    • Participate in a study abroad or international internship opportunity
    • Create a profile on WVU Connect and research WVU alumni working professionally in your area of interest
    • Complete Round 1 Entry of the WV Business Plan Competition

CROSS-CULTURAL COMPETENCY

Required Core (1)

  • Attend 2 diversity/inclusion/social justice workshops

Elective Options (2)

  • Research Title IX processes and write a reflection
  • Participate in a Diversity Week event
  • Participate in the Diversity Peer Academy
  • Participate in a program sponsored by FirstGen Initiatives
  • Participate in an activity sponsored by the Multicultural Center or Catamounts Connect
  • Engage in a program/initiative focused on identity
  • Other – Cross Cultural Competency

APPRECIATION OF THE ARTS

Required Core (1)

  • Attend an event at Church-McKee Arts Center

Elective Options (2)

  • Visit an art museum of WVU and write a reflection
  • Read the book selected through the Campus Read initiative and write a reflection
  • Attend or participate in a performing arts event (music, play, etc.)
  • Attend an art gallery/viewing
  • Draw, paint, carve or sculpt a project and write a reflection on it
  • Participate in a poetry or creative writing workshop
  • Other – Appreciation of the Arts

WELLNESS

  • Participate as a member of an athletic or intramural sports team
  • Attend a financial literacy session
  • Join a faith-based student organization or religious group
  • Participate in a meditation or mindfulness program
  • Participate in Recovery Ally Training
  • Participate in an event sponsored by any of the following:
    • Student Activities/Rec Center
    • Mental Health and Counselor office
    • PSC Health Center
    • PSC Multicultural Center

COMMUNITY STANDARDS AND STUDENT RESPONSIBILITY

Required Core (1)

  • Complete the Know the Code online education module offered by the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities

Elective Options (1)

  • Attend an academic integrity focused workshop or presentation
  • Attend a bystander intervention training session
  • Attend an event or presentation that promotes responsibility
  • Participate in an activity that strives to develop a positive relationship between PSC students and Keyser residents
  • Participate in a program conducted by the University Police Department

SENSE OF SELF

  • Take the StrengthsFinder test or other personality assessment such as True Colors or Myers-Briggs
  • Complete a Student Lingo Workshop
  • Participate in a program based on your ethnicity
  • Write a reflection on your upbringing
  • Participate in a SORTS Seminar through the Office of Student Success
  • Examine your first, middle, last name or chosen name; write a reflection on its meaning or history
  • Watch a television series or movie based on your ethnicity and write a reflection

REFLECTION PROJECT

Required Core (1)

  • A culminating final project (in a medium negotiated between student and staff adviser) answering the following prompt:
    • Identify one social/economic/community priority or concern facing the state of West Virginia. Examine its roots and impact while identifying strategies for eradication (if applicable).
